Modi ji gifts Singapore PM reproduction of 1849 map!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday  gifted Singapore Premier Lee Hsien Loong a reproduction of a map of Singapore dating back to 1849. 

"Presented PM @leehsienloong a reproduction of a map of the island of Singapore dating back to 1849," Modi tweeted. 

On the second day of his bilateral visit to this city state, the Indian prime minister was hosted to a lunch banquet by Lee. 

Modi stated that the map measuring 52 inches X 52 inches and based on a survey that was done during 1842-45, depicted topographical details of parts of Singapore.

"The map also depicts a description of various points in the vicinity of Singapore town above the level of low water spring tides," he tweeted. 

"The reproduction was done from the cartographic collection of the National Archives of India, New Delhi," he added. 

India and Singapore on Tuesday signed a joint declaration on strategic partnership and nine accords cutting across various sectors following talks between Modi and Lee. 

After the signing of the documents, external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted that the two prime ministers noted the importance of culture between the two countries and encouraged more exhibitions, exchanges and interactions. 

Modi and Lee noted their shared interest in furthering cooperation in the areas of science and technology, particularly in space, biomedicine and ayurveda, the spokesperson added. 

The two prime ministers also released two postal stamps showing Rashtrapati Bhavan and Istana, the Singaporean presidential palace, to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. 

Earlier on Tuesday, Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Istana following which he met Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. 

Modi arrived in Singapore from Malaysia on Monday in the second and last leg of his four-day visit to southeast Asia.

Singapore shares open 0.05% higher on Tuesday!

SINGAPORE - Singapore shares opened higher on Tuesday (Nov-24), with the benchmark Straits Times Index at 2,904.88 in early trade, up 0.05 per cent, or 1.39 points.

Around 48.4 million shares exchanged hands.

Gainers beat losers 58 to 51. 

Bomb threat causes 2-hrs wait to leave SIA plane at Changi Airport - Singapore!

Passengers in a Singapore Airlines (SIA) plane had to wait about two hours to disembark at Changi Airport yesterday due to a bomb threat.

Flight SQ001 had arrived in Singapore from San Francisco, via

Hong Kong, at its scheduled time around noon yesterday.

However, The Straits Times (News Paper) understands that the aircraft was moved to a relatively secluded part of the airport, and that passengers were not allowed to disembark until around 2pm.

Even then, they descended from staircases onto the tarmac, instead of using the airbridge connected to the airport terminal.

Several passengers on the aircraft tweeted pictures of police vehicles and security officials surrounding the plane.

Baggage was delayed for additional security screening, with the first bags arriving in the claim area more than three hours after the plane had landed.

The airline, in a statement, did not give any information on how the threat came to light.

It said: "Singapore Airlines confirms that there was a bomb threat concerning SQ001, (on) Nov 22, which was referred to the authorities.

"We regret that we are unable to provide details as it concerns security."

The police said in a statement that nothing suspicious was found on the plane or its passengers after security checks were carried out.

"The police take a very stern view against anyone who attempts to cause public alarm or fear by spreading hoaxes or false information.

"The police are investigating into the source of the bomb threat."

Yesterday, a Turkish Airlines flight travelling from New York to Istanbul was diverted to Halifax in Canada after a similar threat was made against it.

Tweeting from an account that has since been suspended, a Twitter user alleged that bombs were on board both the Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines flights.

The tweet concerning the SIA plane was made around two hours before the flight landed.

It is not known if action was taken because of the tweet.

Indian PM Modi ji to visit Singapore!

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Singapore is of special significance as both countries commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Singapore on a two-day visit from Monday (Nov 23). 

His visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, is of special significance as both countries commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties. To mark this occasion, Singapore and India will elevate relations by signing the Strategic Partnership Joint Declaration.

The declaration outlines the two countries’ interest in expanding cooperation in key areas like smart cities and urban solutions, skills development, connectivity and economic cooperation. This will build on Singapore’s contributions to India in these areas, which include the master-planning of Amaravati - the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh - and support of the Centre of Excellence in Tourism Training in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

The Strategic Partnership will also acknowledge the importance of enhancing connectivity between India and the region, including the expansion of air links. This will help promote further trade and investment between the two countries as well as people-to-people links.

The partnership will also chart the future direction of Singapore’s cooperation with India in the areas of defence, cultural exchanges, financial services, water and waste management, as well as port management.

On Monday, Mr Modi will deliver the 37th Singapore Lecture, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

On Tuesday, he will deliver a Special Address at the India-Singapore Economic Convention hosted by Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran and interact with Singapore business leaders. 

In addition, Mr Modi will visit ITE College Central together with PM Lee where he will learn more about Singapore’s approach to vocational education and skills training.
