Supreme Court wants Chennai and Rajasthan out of IPL-7

Supreme Court: Chennai and Rajasthan will not be allowed to participate in IPL-7

NEW DELHI — India's Supreme Court recommended on Thursday that batting legend Sunil Gavaskar step in as head of the country's cricket board and banned two teams from this year's IPL over their role in a betting scandal.

After warning the incumbent N Srinivasan that they could order him to quit, a panel of judges proposed 64-year-old Gavaskar take over on an interim basis as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

"In the place of Srinivasan, we propose to appoint an experienced cricket player like Sunil Gavaskar to replace him and function as BCCI president," Justice AK Patnaik said at a hearing in New Delhi.

The two-man panel also said the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals -- the two teams at the centre of an ongoing probe into illegal betting and match-fixing -- should be barred from the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) beginning next month.

The IPL, a Twenty20 tournament that draws some of the biggest names in world cricket, has been embroiled in a number of scandals since it began less than a decade ago.

The panel is looking at a damning report it commissioned into wrongdoing in last year's tournament when former Test bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth was caught deliberately bowling badly while playing for the Rajasthan Royals in return for thousands of dollars from bookmakers.

Released in February, the report also concluded that Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan -- who was the team principal of the Chennai Super Kings -- could be guilty of illegal betting on IPL games.

The Super Kings are owned by India Cements. Srinivasan is managing director of this firm. The team is captained by India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

"We are not removing anyone now, but Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals will not be allowed to participate in the IPL which commences on April 16," added Patnaik, who is head of the two-judge panel.

Devastating Impact

Such a ban would have a devastating impact on the eight-team IPL which is due to resume next month in the United Arab Emirates. The start of this year's tournament has been relocated as India is holding a general election.

On Tuesday, the court had urged Srinivasan to stand down as president of the board to enable a "fair" investigation into the allegations.

He has so far not reacted to either the call to resign nor Thursday's recommendation from the court about Gavaskar replacing him.

The 64-year-old Gavaskar, the first player ever to score 10,000 runs in Test match cricket, is now a television commentator and is a former head of the ICC's cricket committee. He is also a strident newspaper columnist and has been at the forefront of recent calls for coach Duncan Fletcher's sacking.

The report commissioned by the court, which was released in February, suggested Meiyappan may have passed on team information to outsiders for illegal betting, but did not specify what information or to whom.

Srinivasan is regarded as the most powerful man in world cricket and is due to take over in July as head of the International Cricket Council.

India is the most powerful country in world cricket due to its vast television audience, which enables the board to generate almost 70 percent of the game's revenues.

International news organisations, including Agence France-Presse (AFP), have suspended their on-field coverage of matches hosted by the BCCI since 2012 after the board imposed restrictions on picture agencies.

Gavaskar willing to step in as BCCI head

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar said he was willing to step in as president of the Indian cricket board after the Supreme Court recommended he take over from embattled incumbent N Srinivasan.

"If the honourable Supreme Court tells you to do something, then of course...if they ask me to do something, I will do it," Gavaskar told the NDTV network.

"There is nothing that you can do if the Supreme Court - the highest court - asks you to do something, that's it."

Srini offers to step aside

N Srinivasan offered to step down as the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Thursday in the wake of a fixing and betting scandal surrounding the Indian Premier League.

The BCCI, whose lawyer told the court that Srinivasan was ready to step aside, has been asked to respond to the proposals on Friday.

Missing Malaysian plane: Could it have landed?

MH370
(CNN) -- Yet another theory is taking shape about what might have happened to missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: Maybe it landed in a remote Indian Ocean island chain.

The suggestion -- and it's only that at this point -- is based on analysis of radar data revealed Friday by Reuters suggesting that the plane wasn't just blindly flying northwest from Malaysia. And it's just one of untold theories floating around about what might have happened to the airliner, which disappeared a week ago Friday without leaving much of a trace of where it had gone or why.

Reuters, citing unidentified sources familiar with the investigation, reported that whoever was piloting the vanished jet was following navigational way-points that would have taken the plane over the Andaman Islands.

The radar data don't show the plane over the Andaman Islands but only on a known route that would take it there, Reuters cited its sources as saying.

The theory builds on earlier revelations by U.S. officials that an automated reporting system on the airliner was pinging satellites for hours after its last reported contact with air traffic controllers. U.S. investigators concluded that the pings didn't come from other planes, leading some investigators to think the plane flew on for hours before truly disappearing.
Taken together, the data point toward speculation in a dark scenario in which someone took the plane for some unknown purpose, perhaps terrorism.
The movie-plot theory seems more complicated and unlikely than one in which the plane -- its flight crew perhaps incapacitated -- simply flew on until it ran out of fuel or faced some other problem. But it's one that law enforcement has to check out, former FBI Assistant Director James Kallstrom said.

"You draw that arc, and you look at countries like Pakistan, you know, and you get into your 'Superman' novels, and you see the plane landing somewhere and (people) repurposing it for some dastardly deed down the road," he told CNN's Jake Tapper on Thursday.

Aviation experts say it's possible, if highly unlikely, that someone could have hijacked and landed the giant Boeing 777 undetected.

The international airport in Port Blair, the regional capital of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, has a runway that is long enough to accommodate a 777, according to publicly available data.

But the region is highly militarized because of its strategic importance to India, Indian officials with knowledge of the operation tell CNN, making it an unlikely target for pirates trying to sneak in an enormous airplane with a wingspan of more than 200 feet.

Denis Giles, editor of the Andaman Chronicle newspaper, says there's just nowhere to land such a big plane in his archipelago without attracting notice.

"There is no chance, no such chance, that any aircraft of this size can come towards Andaman and Nicobar Islands and land," he said.

The Malaysian government said Friday that it can't confirm the report.

And a senior U.S. official offered a conflicting account Thursday, telling CNN that "there is probably a significant likelihood" the plane is on the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

The jetliner, with 239 people on board, disappeared nearly a week ago as it flew between Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Beijing. The flight has turned into one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history, befuddling industry experts and government officials. Authorities still don't know where the plane is or what caused it to vanish.

Suggestions of what happened have ranged from a catastrophic explosion to hijacking to pilot suicide.

As part of the investigation, officials are looking into concerns that lithium batteries in the cargo hold, which have been blamed in previous crashes, could have played a role in the disappearance, according to U.S. officials briefed on the latest intelligence and law enforcement developments in the investigation. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release details to the media.
Searching...

Details of the searchMalaysian officials, who are coordinating the search, said Friday that the hunt for the plane was spreading deeper into both the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.

India has deployed assets from its navy, coast guard and air force to the south Andaman Sea to take part the search, the country's Ministry of Defense said Friday.

Indian search teams are combing large areas of the archipelago. Two aircraft are searching land and coastal areas of the island chain from north to south, an Indian military spokesman said Friday, and two coast guard ships have been diverted to search along the islands' east coast. Indian officials are also including part of the Bay of Bengal in their search, officials said.As of Friday, 57 ships and 48 aircraft from 13 countries were involved in the search, Hussein said.

China, which said it would be extending its search, said crews have searched more than 27,000 square miles (about 70,000 square kilometers) of the South China Sea without finding anything.

On Friday, the United States sent the destroyer USS Kidd to scout the Indian Ocean as the search expands into that body of water.

"I, like most of the world, really have never seen anything like this," Cmdr. William Marks of the U.S. 7th Fleet said of the scale of the search. "It's pretty incredible."

"It's a completely new game now," he said. "We went from a chess board to a football field."

Other developments
"Seafloor event": Chinese researchers say they recorded a "seafloor event" in waters around Malaysia and Vietnam about an hour and a half after the missing plane's last known contact. The event was recorded in a non-seismic region about 116 kilometers (72 miles) northeast of the plane's last confirmed location, the University of Science and Technology of China said.

"Judging from the time and location of the two events, the seafloor event may have been caused by MH370 crashing into the sea," said a statement posted on the university's website.

However, U.S. Geological Survey earthquake scientist Harley Benz said Friday that the event appeared to be consistent with a naturally occurring 2.7-magnitude earthquake.

Malaysian response: Authorities continued to defend their response to the crash. "A normal investigation becomes narrower with time, I understand, as new information focuses the search," Hishammuddin Hussein, the minister in charge of defense and transportation, said at a news briefing. "But this is not a normal investigation. In this case, the information we have forces us to look further and further afield."

However, Bob Francis, a former National Transportation Safety Board official, is one of several experts who have questioned how Malaysian authorities have handled the situation.

"The Malaysians are not doing a superb job of running this investigation," he said. "And they apparently give you some information, and then they withhold information. How much are they relying on and listening to the Europeans and the NTSB who are there with more expertise? I don't know, but I think you know we've got a mixture of a very strange situation that happens to be in an environment, a regulatory environment, that really isn't capable or isn't running an investigation the way it should be run."

They both married in 2000 in Chennai, where they invited many other Kollywood actors and actresses including Rajnikanth, Kamal Haasan, Joseph Vijay, Surya Sivakumar and R. Madhavan. His second Tamil film Pavithra was delayed for 17 months because of a racing injury that left him bed-ridden. Both films received vast appreciation from tamil audience. It was his third Tamil film that released 10 months later in 1995, Aasai, directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Rathnam which helped establish his career as a actor in Kollywood.

Ajith's first big budget venture was Aasai but it was only until the release of Agathiyan's blockbuster Vaanmathi and particularly the National Award winning Kadhal Kottai which established him as an actor in Kollywood. Ajith later played the lead in Amitabh Bachchan's debut Tamil production Ullasam. This venture paid him a salary of over Rs. 1 million for the first time ever.

A string of very successful movies followed, most notably Kadhal Mannan and Vaali which cast him alongside Simran. Vaali saw a new peak in Ajith's career. He played a dual role in the film. One as a deaf-and-dumb twin who lusts after his naive brother's wife . After Amarkalam with his then-fiancee, now wife Shalini, Ajith set up his own distribution company AK International with the office located within the premises of NIC Arts which was run by his ex-friend, producer and distributor S. S. Chakravarthi. This office was shifted in 2006.

In 2001 , Ajith played the role of Shahrukh Khan's brother in the commercially unsuccessful historical film Asoka. He began the year with the scintillating movie Dheena directed by A.R.Murugadoss. This movie showed Ajith as a rowdy and he acted alongside Suresh Gopi and Laila Mehdin. Citizen opposite Vasundhara Das was experimentally successful and earned the actor with lot of appreciation and awards but the movie failed to mark it's signature in the box office, Citizen was followed by Poovellam Un Vaasam which was also an average grosser.

The film Raja opposite Jyothika Saravanan and the action flick Red  proved to be a disaster for the actor and marked the downfall and an proved to be an all time low in the actor's career.

In 2003 and 2004, Ajith acted in Anjaneya, Jana and Attagasam. While Anjaneya and Jana flopped at the box office, Attagasam became a hit, also giving a successful soundtrack album. He later went on to act in the film Ji which opened very well but failed to sustain success in the longrun.

During 2006, Ajith acted in 3 projects. First he acted in Paramasivan directed P. Vasu and then in Thirupathi directed by Perarasu. Both were hit. Later that year he released his 3 year-pending project Varalaru: History of Godfather directed by K. S. Ravikumar. Varalaru turned out to be a super hit movie in terms of collection due to the three roles he played as an old man who was once a classical dancer and two identical twins, with one being the antagonist.

Ajith's first film in 2007 was with the newcomer director Chella in his maiden film entitled Aalwar. Aalwar did not live up to the expectations created by the success of Varalaru. As a result it was a major let down for Ajith. After Aalwar, Ajith acted in a Kireedam with Trisha Krishnan.

On December 14, 2007 Billa released breaking all his previous records. The movie was the remake of Rajinikanth's 1980 Tamil film Billa. Ajith then starred in Billa II, a prequel to his 2007 blockbuster Billa, which released on 13 July 2012 to mixed reviews with critics praising Ajith's screen presence and stunts, film's cinematography, pace and style while criticizing the climax to be poor and blaming the director.
